1 week assignment

Mission: its the olympics this week so the mission is to capture a sporting moment. I want you to check out the sports pages of your local paper and capture an image from an event that shows action or emotion. Extra points to anyone who makes it to Beijing.

Background
This assignment was a disaster for me. No sport going on that I knew about and a couple of missed opportunities to go to a casual league ice hockey and baseball game had me trying for one on a canoe outing today.

Well my battery went flat in the early part of the trip which turned out to be lucky because I stowed my camera in a waterproof bag. The bag proved worth its weight in gold when our canoe capsized and it fell right into the river! None of the contents got wet (my 70-300USM and my standard 18-55mm and camera body)!

My wife (Anne) was not so lucky and neither was her brother. Her point and shoot (a birthday gift exactly a year ago today) and his new olympus SLR were fully submerged. We still don't know whether they will be ok... lots of condensation on the preview screens!

So tonight we had a barbeque for her brother and nephew as their visit comes to an end - and an inevitable table tennis tournament.

This is my son Matt serving at 16 each and this is my somewhat last minute submission for the assignment. (I didn't want to miss one even on a semi-disastrous day!) He didn't win this one....

Table tennis is an olympic sport so I figured this would pass.

I wanted to diffuse the flash and don't have any external flash so I used a paper napkin in front of the built-in lens. The flash was not bright enough so I ended up pushing it to compensate one stop more than it though it needed. I didn't want to bring the speed below 100 so that the ball would be relatively steady so I had to push the ISO up to 800.

I did some selective level adjustment to bring down the brightness of the net in the foreground.

I had to manually fix red-eye because Photoshop Elements was not fixing it automatically. To do this I used a paintbrush that was somewhat opague and then made sure to exclude the highlights form the painted area.

I then used a levels layer to set the white balance with the eye-dropper on the white in his shirt. This made a dramatic change to the color, sharpness and light of the image. I liked it like this so left it.

Off the top of my head, the shadows are the biggest problem - and would love to hear what people suggest for overcoming this with a built-in flash.
